Special Sports Program

The Stevens Point Area Public School District established a Special Sports program in 1980. More than three decades later, the program offers athletic competitions in bowling, basketball, swimming, gymnastics, track, cornhole, soccer, snowshoeing, bocce, and softball. These sports are provided throughout the year. The purpose of the program is to enhance fitness, self-esteem, social competence, motor skill development, and teamwork. Individuals must meet the following criteria to participate:
1. A documented disability which may include limitations in cognition, learning, and adaptive skills.
2. A medical examination (physical) every 3 years with the completed “Special Olympics Medical Examination” form signed by a medical provider.
3. A parent/guardian signature on the official Special Olympics Release form.
4. Required parent/guardian and student athlete signatures on the Stevens Point Area Public School District Special Sports Athletic Code (Junior and Senior High students only)
5. A current Stevens Point Area Public School District Individualized Education Plan (IEP).
6. Participants must be 10-21 years of age to participate in Special Sports. Specific sports eligibility is based upon age, as outlined below:
a. Athletes ages 10-21 can participate in the following sports: bowling, track, corn hole, snowshoeing, and bocce.
b. Athletes enrolled in grades 7-12 can participate in the above sports and the following team sports: basketball, swimming (must be able to swim length of pool), soccer, and softball.
