    Something you can do at home to help your child develop a mature pencil grasp is to break those crayons and pieces of chalk into small pieces.  If you have difficulty breaking brand new art supplies, you can also purchase small tools from a company such as Handwriting Without Tears, but this is not necessary.  Giving your child small writing tools will force them to use a more mature grasp pattern.
