Weather Advisory – Extreme Cold Warning & School Status

SPAPSD Staff and Families:
The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Cold Warning for our area from 9:00 PM this evening through 10:00 AM Tuesday, with wind chills as low as -35°F expected. While these cold temperatures will be most severe overnight, conditions are expected to improve throughout the day.
At this time, schools will remain open as scheduled, provided buses are able to operate as expected. In making this decision, we considered both the timing of the coldest predicted temperatures and our schedule for the week. Elementary students were already scheduled to be off today, February 17, and all students have a scheduled E-Learning day on Friday, February 21. Given these factors, along with improving conditions throughout the day Tuesday, we do not anticipate the need for a schedule change. We will continue to monitor conditions overnight and into the early morning hours and will share any updates as needed.
Due to the cold, some buses may experience delays. Families can track the real-time location of their student’s bus using the My Stop App, available for download on Google Play or the Apple Store. While we are making every effort to hold school as planned, we will communicate any changes as early as possible if circumstances require an adjustment.
We recognize that weather conditions can impact families differently, and families may always choose to keep their child home if they feel it is necessary. If you choose to do so, please notify your school, and the absence will be excused.
As always, we encourage everyone to take proper precautions when heading outside. Frostbite can occur in as little as 10 minutes in these conditions, so dressing in warm layers, including a hat, gloves, and a face covering, is essential. If using space heaters, follow safety guidelines, and never use generators or grills indoors.
We appreciate your understanding and support in keeping students safe while maintaining learning opportunities. Please stay safe and warm, and thank you for your partnership.
Sincerely,
Cory Hirsbrunner, Ed.D.
Superintendent
Stevens Point Area Public School District
