Our boundaries reach to Lake DuBay and the Marathon County Line to the north, the Township of Milladore to the west, the Buena Vista marsh in the south and to the hills of Custer in the east.While being one of the State's largest districts, in both area, and student membership, our district exemplifies excellence in education. The district adheres to a strong set of academic standards and has put into place K-6 benchmarks. Students participate in regular formative assessments as part of their classroom experience. In addition, students in grades 3-8 and 10 are assessed with the Wisconsin Knowledge and Concepts Exam. Students in our district continually achieve higher percentages than the State average, of proficiency and advanced proficiency in the Wisconsin Knowledge and Concepts Examinations. Besides strong academic areas of language arts, math, science and social studies, the district offers three foreign languages (French, German, and Spanish), school-to-work opportunities, family and consumer education, gifted and talented program, technology business instruction, health, physical education, music, and art instruction. The halls are filled with trophies and plaques highlighting our students' achievements. Every year many of our students receive recognition in art, music and debate. The district also provides a variety of extra curricular offerings. Drama, service clubs, special interest clubs and a full slate of athletic offerings are available to all students to help complement academic offerings and provide a rich and rewarding educational experience. Our local university, UW-Stevens Point, Mid-State Technical College, the school district and community also share the asset of a rich and diverse culture. More than sixteen different countries are represented in the university's foreign exchange program. Bannach has three classes per grade in a K-6 format. A K-6 school, Jefferson became a charter school in 2004 and has as its focus, the integration of the arts with the core curricula. A broader range of subject areas and choices become available academically. Students who choose to broaden their horizons in the areas of music, computers, art, athletics, drama, technology education, or foreign languages, for example, have the opportunity to do that at both Ben Franklin and P.J. Jacobs. In addition to academic opportunities, both schools provide a variety of co-curricular activities to enhance and develop the talents and skills of young adolescents. Clubs and activities such as Ski Club, Student Council, Chess Club, and Forensics allow students enrichment experiences outside the academic school day. Academically, the schools meet the needs of individual students through special programs such as charter school initiatives, supplemental math and reading programs, and special education programs. SPASH provides students with outstanding core academic instruction that is delivered from highly respected and well trained teachers. Students at SPASH have options in every facet of their high school career; both academic and co-curricular. SPASH students are able to participate in student government, advance placement courses, music, drama and athletics. SPASH has a charter school called the Wisconsin River Academy that is a model for other schools nationally. It also has a very active National Honor Society, Key Club, Adventure Club, Debate, Future Farmers of America and Students Against Driving Drunk organizations. SPASH offers seven choirs, three bands and two orchestras. The Building construction program is recognized state-wide for the quality of homes that are built using a collaborative effort between local trades people and our students. The district supports the Charles E. Fernandez Center for Alternative Learning. This unique Secondary school serves approximately 175 students, grades 11 and 12. It offers alternative educational options for students and parents of students that have not thrived in the traditional school setting. The Fernandez Center is a facility of its own and provides an alternative setting and curriculum that foster students' educational, emotional, and social growth. Students at the alternative school are enrolled in one of three programs; the Return Program, the Transition Program, or the Alternative Diploma Program. |
